Would anyone who received one of the free USB WiFi dongles Please confirm they work out of the box and then provide the chip set used so anyone can purchase one if needed without guesswork. For windows this is usually less problematic because the drivers can be downloaded or often included in package.

Little history some of these devices work better than others particularly when used with Linux. the problem is often manufactures sell nearly the same model IE Trendnet 150n one will have a Broadcom chip set another will have an Athros chip set, often the only difference on the packaging will be a sub model IE 150n ver. c or a fully different bar code\UPC. the more details you can provide the better.

Maybe I should have posted this under Projects>Networking servers" as it's not really a project I posted here but I did report it to the mod in case they feel it should be moved.

The Chip is Realtek8188CUS, you can get it easy on the market.

Tim maybe we could start a section on tested hardware where people can list items that work and others that don't etc. that way some members can reliably find what they are looking for without getting burned etc. just a thought. one last question is there a way to PM someone on the forum rather than posting where everyone can see?
