I believe I received a bad board. Things I have tried;
1. I have installed Ubuntu 14, on the first attempt using a cd the installation froze.
2. I formatted it again and it installed but the OS froze during the installation of the first program I tried to install.
3. I formatted again and used a Flash drive to install Ubuntu 14 instead of a CD ROM and again it froze during install.
4. So I tried to install Ubuntu 12 instead of Ubuntu 14 and now it wont boot to the Flash Drive nor a CD Drive.
5. It will not not boot to a flash drive containing Ubuntu 14, 15, 12, nor Linux Centos. I have also tried using 2 different CD Drives. Every time it starts, it boots to UEFI Shell even though the Flash or Cd Rom is set as the default boot device, though sometimes it doesn't recognize the CDROM in the bios.
6. I was going to try to reflash the bios but it will not accept the file. All of the file names listed in the BIOS folder have a ? in the name . For example fp? –f exb7a2_a64.bin . Even after renaming the .bin file to something shorter like 64.bin it is not recognized as an internal or external command.
7. I have tried 2 different power adapters, one plugged into usb and one plugged into the wall. I have also tried all 3 usb ports.

Any suggestions?

Hi Sir,
1. Did you try to run something on the preinstalled Fedora system? Does it work fine?
2. The JaguarBoard only supports UEFI bootloader, so when you try to boot from Flash drive or CD drive, the system in the drive must support UEFI, otherwise the drive will not be shown in UEFI Boot options;
3. If you need to install Ubuntu, pls choose ubuntu desktop dist.; if you want to run Ubuntu server, pls choose 14.04.4, old version did not contain eMMC driver.
4. When you try to create a USB bootable drive, pls choose a right tool, i tried rufus, powerISO and Win32DiskImager, only Win32DiskImager is working, others will cause freezing during the installation.
5. Please try to use Win32DiskImager to flash ubuntu server 14.04.4 iso file into USB drive, then use it to install ubuntu server into eMMC on Jaguarboard.

Please keep us update, thank you!

Im not sure about Fedora. It booted to it initially but the first thing I attempted to do after a single Fedora boot was install Ubuntu, which formatted over Fedora.

I did as you suggested and used Win32DiskImager. I tried it with Ubuntu 14.04.4.x64 and it once again goes directly to the UEFI Shell. In Bios I can see my PnY Flash drive listed as the first boot device yet it skips right over it. Even choosing a boot override in BIOS and selecting the Flash Drive just makes the screen flash and return right back to the BIOS window.

Something is definitely off. I got further initially then I am able to get now. It won't even try to install Ubuntu no matter what I select. Initially I used to be able to at least get to the installation screen every time. Even disabling UEFI Shell as a boot device option and only leaving the PNY Flash Drive as enabled doesn't work.

I've tried 3 different flash drives in all usb ports using Win32DiskImager. I have also tried booting a simple CloneZilla linux flash drive that I use constantly to clone linux on dozens of pcs and it wont boot that either.

I attached a screenshot of me opening the flash drive in UEFI Shell, as you can see i can't even CD into the boot directory because it sees it as bo?t . Not really sure what to do , but it seems like that may be the problem. Something corrupt in the UEFI Bootloader?

I received another JaguarBoard in the mail today and the new one boots up my Flash Drive.
Now on the 2nd board im having the same problem with Ubuntu Desktop. So to isolate the issue I decided to install ubuntu server and then manually install the Desktop using apt-get install ubuntu-desktop......
See 2nd
attachment to view the errors produced. So it looks like I got a 2nd board with bad eMMC ??

Hi Sir,

It is really weird. The USB drive shows in EFI shell should be fs0, fs1 or fs2, never should be blk1. Are you sure you entered the right drive ?

About the ubuntu, it is not suggested to install desktop version, it will cause system freezing because of lacking RAM or some x11 app incompatible (not sure).

If you like desktop, try debian 8.1? We have tested it and it works well.

We also tested ubuntu server version 14.04.4, works fine so far. maybe you can tell me how did u make errors happen on ubuntu server if you faced. The picture above seems show hardware interrupt is timeout when reading/writing eMMC flash, maybe RAM full or CPU is 100% used because of some incompatible software.

If possible, try to install Fedora server 22 or 23, we test many many things and long long time on it, it is stable enough! If you faced same thing on Fedora, that will be possible hardware faulty; otherwise it is software incompatibilty.

I need a OS with a GUI that will run java. I finally got Ubuntu ("Lubuntu") to run smoothly but on almost every reboot it seems to freeze half way through the boot process. The only thing we need this board for is to run a java application at boot up. I'll give Debian a shot thanks.

I had that same problem. I had issues with the mmcblk0 device and ubuntu, what I did to fix it was actually launch a knoppix CD, use parted to change the mmcblk0 device from GPT to MBR (label msdos) and then re-install. I used RUFUS to put the ubuntu 14.04 iso image on a flash stick with MBR partition for BIOS or UEFI + FAT32 as my install media.

I'm not claiming to know why that worked, but I am saying it did work for me. All my mmcblk0 freezing went away and the install worked fine, seems to be fine since then as well.

EDIT: Actually, having more problems with mmcblk0 device today, so this is not a fix. Attached file is a photo of the screen.
