What would be the prerequisites to boot from a flash drive? I can't see USB drive in the boot options, only appears "Built-in EFI Shell", "UEFI OS" and Fedora.

Sir, you need to create a UEFI bootable USB drive.

I've done this a couple of times now; the first time, I think I used the wrong partition scheme, and was forced to use NTFS, but I've now followed this example, and I am still unable to boot to the USB, or even to an external DVD. I get the option when pressing F11, but it just continues to boot to the UEFI Shell. What am I missing?

What ISO file you use? Can you try this step by step guide?

Just for confirmation about the boot issue you said.

I loaded the suggested image to my USB, with the same build options, but have the same problem; the USB stick appears in my list of bootable options, but it will not boot. I've tried multiple USB sticks as well, and a USB DVD drive, with the same result.

FYI, my original attempt was to load the latest Windows 10 build from an iso image (v1511 feb2016 x64).

ohmm, can you show me the screenshot of UEFI utility?
I think your uefi is 32 bit for windows if you can boot win10 build, you need to flash uefi to 64 bit for linux.
