We have around 20 JaguarBoards running the Debian install preloaded along with Gnome, and on August 1st every one of them crashed. Whenever we plug in a wifi card it goes down. I've narrowed it down to a display issue. If I adjust the resolution on the monitor I can get it to at least accept the wifi card, but as soon as a new window tries to open or I expand a windows/ click settings / try to connect to a wifi network / etc. The screen goes black and the board restarts. Any suggestions to fixing a resolution / video card / issue or whatever it may be on these boards. I've done an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, I have also tried didnt wifi card chipsets such as Realtek and Atheros with no luck.

After much more diagnosing it looks like every time a window is maximized or any window tries to take the real estate of the screen it locks up and crashes. I've tried different monitors and different resolutions with mixed results. Maximizing ALWAYS crashes it, but some windows and programs are able to open by using monitors with different aspect ratios. So this seems like it has to be a Display Driver / or X Windows issue. Still trying to come up with a fix.

Hi Sir,

I am not sure what is the reason to cause those issues you faced. I have tested debian 8.1 with wifi dongle EDUP EP-N8508GS (chip RTL8188ucs), everything is fine, no crash at all. To connect a monitor, I use a HDMI to VGA adapter, because no HDMI on my monitor.

May I know more details about those boards? When did you get it? After you get it, you installed Debian instead of preloaded Fedora 22? After you installed debian, it will crash soon? Before it crash, what did you do? If possible, add my skype id: tim.jjune, we can talk in details.

Tim ,

I've requested you on Skype. What we need is a stable Linux GUI with Java support. The only thing we use theses boards for is to run a .jar file . I was not able to get the pre-loaded revision of Fedora to run a .jar file. If you have an image of Fedora with Gnome or KDE that has Java installed this is really all we need. Do you have any images you could provide of Fedora that has GUI ? It seems that just about every time I go through the steps of installing a GUI of any flavor of Linux on the JaguarBoard it becomes unstable, Debian 8 is so far the only one we had working and now it has failed as well.

I have even tried a Live boot version of Fedora 23 and when it gets to the desktop it crashes (Note this is from a freshly load image on a flash drive with no changes. I briefly see the desktop and then I get No Signal on my monitor).

I have also tried a Live boot of Fedora 22 with KDE , it will boot to the desktop but when I click on Settings it crashes.

Hopefully we can discuss more on Skype. I am Eastern Standard Time.

Thanks,

Josh

Hi Sir,

I got your invitation, but we have 12 hours difference.
Did you monitor the RAM status when you run GUI with Java environment? I am afraid 1GB RAM is not enough to handle that.
If no jave running, only Debian with desktop, will it work stable?

I can't even get the GUI to run without Java. I will monitor the RAM on Debian 8 to see if that is an issue, but it seems to crash consistently when opening windows on a fresh install. LCD Monitor's seem to be an issue as well as I've seen other users have issues with certain HDMI monitors. We've tried 5 different monitors and various cables, HDMI to HDMI, HDMI to DVI and HDMI to VGA, each combination seems to produce different crashes. Realtek Chipset Wifi Adapter's seem to crash the board as soon as I plug them in. Atheros chipset adapters are working.

I've attached the syslog. Please note that even removing our scripts... /home/jag/KERNEL && bash launch_kiosk_run_loop.sh , still doesn't fix the other crashes.

Sir,
I do not understand. Do you mean you can not run desktop on debian 8, no matter you install java or not, it will crash?
I have tested debian 8.1 with desktop for over 48 hours before, no crash at all.

To verify it is because of hardware issue or software(OS/applications configuration) issue, can you try to run Fedora server 22 for long time (48 hours)? Check if it will fail or crash, if everything is fine with fedora, that means it is software issue, you need to figure it out.
